Field of Study and Main Achievements
Discovery of superconductivity in the ruthenium oxide Sr2RuO4 .
Domestic and international collaborations with over 70 groups in 15 countries by providing high-quality crystalline samples lead to the discovery and confirmations of spin-triplet superconductivity in Sr2RuO4. Further studies are still needed to fully prove the existence of spin-triplet superconductivity. This superconductor is considered as a leading candidate of a topological superconductor, which would exhibit novel phenomena also applicable to quantum computing.
Currently, the leader of a national research project: "*Topological Quantum Phenomena *in Condensed Matter with Broken Symmetries", (July 2010-March 2015), a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas, MEXT, Japan. http://www.topological-qp.jp/english/index.html
This project aims to develop a revolutionary viewpoint of materials by establishing phenomena emerging from topological quantum state of matter found in some special superconductors, superfluids, and insulators.
As an example, the surface of a topological insulator is predicted to exhibit metallic conductivity with spontaneous spin current circulating without energy dissipation. Topological materials including such topological superconductors and topological insulators are envisaged to be applied to devices for future technology.
